Hawthorn Berry, "The Heart Herb"

With Valentines Day upon us, let's discuss a grande remedy for the heart.

When I was in homeopathy school one of my teachers told us that whenever she had a client with a heart condition, she would almost always add Crataegus oxycantha, aka Hawthorn berry, into their schedule. She said it was a grande heart tonic!

Hawthorn berry is known as a "cardiotonic" herb and has been traditionally used in treating heart failure, alongside other traditional medications.

It has been shown to be valuable in all kinds of serious heart conditions such as heart failure*, heart disease, angina, heart weakness, irregular pulse and Myocarditis. It's useful in Arteriosclerosis, because of its solvent power upon calcareous deposits in the arteries.

This means it helps to clean them out!

Crateagus is also a medicine that has been used to treat high and low blood pressure and is helpful for recovery after a heart attack.

Often clients will come to me asking if there is anything they can take instead of the prescribed statins, and blood pressure drugs. I never tell people to get off of their drugs or dismiss doctors recommendations, that is not my job. Instead, I offer suggestions such as Arnica 3 or 6 to help correct the vascular condition as an alternative to baby Aspirin, and Crateagus alongside the recommended drug or better yet, before a drug is even prescribed.

Dr. Green of Ennis, Ireland, had a reputation for the cure of heart disease that caused patients to flock to him from all parts of the United Kingdom. He cured the majority of them and amassed considerable wealth by means of his secret medicine. Contrary to the code, he, though a physician in good standing, refused to reveal the remedy to his professional brethren. After his death, his daughter revealed that the remedy her father had used successfully was Crataegus oxycantha. ~ Nature's Materia Medica, Robin Murphy ND

Now if there is a client with a heart condition I, like my teacher before me, always think of Crateagus oxycantha and more often than not, add it to my clients schedules.

One of the easiest ways to start adding a moderate amount of hawthorn to your diet is with hawthorn berry tincture. The recommended dosage is to place 5-10 drops into a small amount of water and take once or twice daily.

Because Hawthorn is best known as a cardiotonic herb, it can do wonderful things for the heart. However, you should not take heart problems lightly and always seek professional help when necessary.

Happy Valentines Day!

*It is also important to note that heart failure is a very serious health condition. It’s best not to self-treat with hawthorn supplements if you suffer from this condition.
